I need your big brains. I vaguely recall having recently seen a paper in the ASAP section of some journal (ACS or ACIEE) about a method allowing direct reduction of esters to a methyl group. I’m trying to find it but I can’t. Do anybody know what I’m talking about?

As stated in the Tomas Hudlicky’s “The Way of Synthesis”, it is one of those chemical problems in the Prof. Stevens’(remember Stevens rearrangement?) list of unsolved problems which he used to have in 70s…After 50 years it is still not solved, so it is not surprising that you couldn’t find it
I would search methods using B(C6F5)3 and R3SiH. Please note that these systems require a super-strong Lewis acid, or super strong Bronstedt acid (such as neat TfOH) so there will be severe compatibility limitations on what you can have in your molecule.
Long time ago I have done a conventional 3-step sequence starting from pyroglutamic acid Me-ester to 5-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, and it worked rather nicely (LiBH4 in THF, then MsCl/Bu4NI/lutidine in MeCN, then Pd-C/H2), I remember it took me less than 2 days to complete on a gram scale.
Yeah, I really don’t mind the work that is needed with the 3-step sequence. It’s just not very pretty in a total synthesis and it’s the kind of things that make the difference between an elegant synthesis and a laborious synthesis.

of course like your website however you need to test the spelling on quite a few of your posts. Many of them are rife with spelling issues and I find it very bothersome to tell the reality then again I will certainly come again again.
